A Novel Idea
Bookshop
Project Type: Illustration & Branding
Brief
Date: 2024
'A Novel Idea' is Godalming's only charity book and record shop. Located on Queen Street just off the High Street, the shop is run mainly by volunteers, and stocks a wide range of pre-loved books, records and CDs. All proceeds made by the bookshop go to Catalyst support, a local mental health charity operating in Surrey.
'A Novel Idea' had never had an established brand, after gaining more popularity locally they approached me to create their branding, that showcased their amazing bookshop. The direction they wanted to go in was an 'oldie-worldie' bookshop nestled in a quaint town, using illustration to bring the shop to life.
After creating a mood board, focusing on pulling imagery from old english bookshops in Oxford and Cambridge and historical ornate embellishments, I moved onto creating a colour palette. I wanted to create a watercolour illustration of the front of the shop that would be a longstanding part of the brand that they could rely on, using across a variety of collateral. Being an independent bookshop, this would suit them as they have limited budget for design. Once central illustrations were created, they were embedded into collateral such as posters, book marks and signs. They had a pre-existing shop sign/logo which is why a logo was not a part of this project.
